FOR THE CONSERVATION, REHABILITATION, AND PROTECTION OF YELLAGONGA REGIONAL PARK

Welcome to Friends of Yellagonga

We’re a not-for-profit and non-government conservation group whose mission is to promote and participate in the rehabilitation and protection of Yellagonga Regional Park, Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, to ensure long-term environmental sustainability and compatible human use.

It’s a special place to us, full of rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty.

Think turtles, bandicoots, cockatoos, kangaroos, wildflowers, and hundred-year-old trees.

And we have been here since 1992 to make sure that future generations can enjoy it as much as we do.

We welcome everyone to join us: all individuals, at all skill levels, ages, and backgrounds. We’ve got a range of different volunteer positions on offer throughout the group, with training opportunities available if you’re looking to learn something new. All you really need is the passion—we can organise the rest.

No, joining Friends of Yellagonga is completely free.

If you see a turtle, alive OR dead, please use the TurtleSAT App to record the sighting. The TurtleSAT app gives us important data to identify where the turtles are in the regional park and what seasons they’re most active.

Please use the Feral Scan app (free to download) and note down where you saw the fox. Please also send an email to the City of Joondalup or City of Wanneroo, depending on which area you saw the fox, and note where you saw it, if it had cubs, and anything unusual about the sighting.

Please contact Tessa from Reptile Services – 0409 378 717 or tessas.reptile.services@gmail.com

If you’ve found injured wildlife, call the Wildcare Helpline on 61 8 9474 9055. The wildlife volunteers answering your call will be able to put you in touch with your nearest registered wildlife rehabilitator, wherever you are in Western Australia.

How much time you commit to Friends of Yellagonga is up to you. You can volunteer for a few hours per month, or take on a position that may require several hours per week, or even a full-time commitment. Let us know how much time you can commit when you sign up.

While you don’t have to be a member to join in our workdays, we do advise that you are. Being a member means you receive weekly email updates on future workdays and events, and it also means you’re covered by our volunteering insurance if anything should happen.

We’re more than happy for you to bring children along with you when volunteering. Children are our future, and we love for them to learn about our local wildlife. The only rule is that a parent must supervise their children at all times.

We can provide training and support to all volunteers. This includes on-the-job training, orientation sessions, and access to resources and tools.

There are many types of volunteer opportunities available, including joining our turtle monitoring project, growing plants in our nursery, helping to weed and maintain our sites, holding educational events in schools, offices, and City festivals, planting natives, photographing our events, or running our social media. The possibilities are endless, and there’s bound to be a volunteer opportunity that aligns with your interests and skills.

While most of our roles do require you to be on-site, we do have some online opportunities, like social media management or administrative support. We can discuss this in more detail when you join us.

No formal background check is required. However, to ensure safety requirements are met, please inform the volunteer coordinator about any injuries that may affect your volunteering. We can alter tasks to allow you to participate safely.

Our Nursery

Yellagonga is truly an incredible ecosystem, so an important part of its conservation is in ensuring the plant population thrives.

Our specialised nursery is what powers us on our mission. It’s where we grow the natives that we plant, each one endemic to the Yellagonga Park area. Nearly every single native species we plant is grown here from seed, every season, and are then planted in the park to help revitalise the area.
